Chapter 12
For a moment, all I can do is stand there, stunned, panicking, and wondering if I should stay the course or just throw in the towel. Deciding rapidly on the former, I manage to stammer out, âI donât know what youâre talking about, Hawthorne. Sir.â Even as the words come out, I can tell itâs no use; Russo is closing the door to Hawthorneâs quarters as we speak, just as I notice him rummaging in his pocket for a moment. Seconds later, he pulls out a small artifact, no bigger than a bottle cap. I canât tell what it is at first, but a closer look reveals it as a simple rune, much like the one used on us in Boston. Enchantment.
Closing his eyes, Hawthorne holds his hand out, and when he speaks, I realize itâs not directed at me, or anyone in the room. âIf you please,â he says in a voice that is frighteningly calm. âIâm afraid I have to discipline some problem children.â Thereâs a pause, and he cocks his head to one side, as if listening to someone only he can hear. Just like that, the rune in his hand begins to glow with power, the light itâs producing quickly becoming blinding.
Some kind of a remote enchantment? I have time to wonder. It dawns on me that he must be communicating with the spellcaster telepathically, if such a thing is even possible. I canât even do it after being given my powers back, and my blood runs cold at the thought of what that means for Hawthorneâs own abilities. Thatâs all I have time to consider, though, before Hawthorne is reaching out towards the first person he sees when he opens his eyes again: Hunter.
âNo!â I yell. I donât think. My brain has already reverted back to fight or flight, my senses closing in on the sight of him brandishing his twisted mind control device at one of the men I love. On autopilot, I lunge to the left and knock the vampire shifter out of the way. He hasnât even had time to shift yetânone of us have. Itâs taken us that long just to process whatâs happening. Hunter goes stumbling to the side, out of the line of fire just as the rune releases a surge of energy.
Iâm not that lucky. Right in the path of the power beam, Iâm hopeless to do anything but take the brunt of the magic squarely in my chest. âMillie, no!â yells one of the guys, but Iâm not even sure which one. My brainâno, my whole beingâis already being consumed.
Iâve been mind controlled once before, back when we went to get help from some of Edithâs contacts. That was a sirenâs song, and although it had felt all-encompassing in the moment, in reality, it was miniscule compared to what Iâm now experiencing. A blip, really, nothing more. This is so much worse.
While the sirenâs enchantment made me into a marionette, a human puppet helpless to do anything but obey, the brainwashing spell is different.
